During my childhood I had to do much multi-tasking, often to the tick of the clock. Therefore, in adulthood I assumed that if I wasn’t operating in octopus- mode, that I was somehow incompetent.
Don’t get me wrong, some people are fantastic at multi-tasking, but I’d say that this is a gift which only a few of us have. Or, that it is only accessible in some aspects of daily life.
In cooking for example, multi-tasking is second nature to me. Because, when we’re experienced at a task, then multi-tasking is undertaken subconsciously, and so it doesn’t peak anxiety; or cause unnecessary stress: something we all need to avoid to sustain our healthy wellbeing.
Yet really, and it’s taken me decades to realise, taking one step at a time, is far more productive. To wholly focus on a single project, bring it to completion, before starting another task, is a far more peaceful approach.
Before, when I tried to be Super-woman, I typically might be trying to hoover, whilst the pasta was cooking, only to get further distracted by attempting to squeeze in a spot of dusting. Result burned pasta, and more work in cleaning up the gloopy starchy mess…
And then thankfully, I banned myself from multitasking, unless it was in cookery, which I find relatively easy and relaxing.
You will know which tasks you can do effortlessly, and keep those in situ since they bring you joy.
But start the practice of singularly focusing on one task at a time; because you’ll find in doing so, that you’ll actually complete far more chores or tasks, and you’ll feel calmer too.
Most of us have busy lifestyles, and so we need to be mindful about the healthiest way to get through our hectic agendas.
When we work, one step at a time, we are preserving our energy for the fun stuff: time spent with our loved ones, hobbies, and enjoying living.
We are uniquely human and have to take care of our entire physiology: mind, body, soul. We are not metal robots, and we can’t afford to be worn down by our historic learned behavioral patterns.
I hope you find this helpful.
SUNNY wishes,
