Now is not the time to be mean to yourselves!
So, however you may feel about yourself, at the moment, I might advise you to put it on pause. Freeze frame any negative emotions, and dare, if not right now, but later today: to look at yourself in the mirror; make a promise to ensure that you try it.
Because if you believe that you’re a good person, then no matter what you are going through, after just a few moments of focusing on your eyes, however addled you may be feeling: you will see your truth and kindness.
Take a couple of minutes further, and smile kindly back at your reflection. Stand upright and pop your shoulders back, as straight as you can. Take a few deep breaths.
Then, try to recall a happy memory when you previously looked at yourself in the mirror; mine is with my oldest friend, us getting ready for a night out.
When you gaze at the mirror, recalling past times with friends, is a lovely quick energy boost. I often remember what music was playing, or what we were singing along to. Doing so triggers more happy memories with other friends, to tumble back into your thoughts: it evokes natural smiles.
Before you break your stare, smile, or cross your fingers, and stand as tall as possible, say:
“I’ve got this”.
Then, if applicable, promise to consider reaching out or speaking to professionals who may be able to help you. Or, promise yourself, that you’ll try to get to bed earlier…
Now is not the time to set unrealistic goals. It’s about being kind to ourselves and making tiny tweaks of consistent self-improvements. Think of saving the pennies to make the pounds: slow steady results. This progress builds your foundations of strength, and it’s a bit like re-doing the grouting work on worn tiles. It’s a tonic for your mental health.
You will start feeling better about yourselves. You’ll be in a more positive frame of mind to: try the job circuit again /feel that you can tackle sorting the cupboard out, one box at a time/ contact your creditors, and so on.
You should be rewarding any small achievement, with a cuppa and a chocolate biscuit—a treat of your choice. Repeat the reward system as you complete each and every small task.
And, when you next may feel overwhelmed, then go back to the mirror, and follow the smile exercise as much as you like. See all your friends in your mind’s eye, and siphon off those glorious memories to help you get through the day.
I hope you find this helpful.
SUNNY wishes,
