We humans need goals to help us keep on track with our aspirations, studies, or work.
Achieving a goal is the ultimate aim for a footballer, whether they are professional or not. In the example of a footballer, it’d be a less complex game if the only skill required were to kick the ball into the back of the net. But that of course discounts the fact that other team players will help make that possible, whilst the opposition will aim to prevent it. What we don’t always see is the intricate strategy behind achieving a goal.
When we translate this to set our own goals and consider what they are, we must be mindful that we have included in our thoughts our own strategy. We can’t simply state something like “I want to move out of my parents’ house and get my own place” without a strategy.
Yet, many of us make such bold announcements, only to fall into the depths of depression when we fail to achieve our desired life changes. Often simply making a statement to your friends can feel as though you have addressed the task and checked it off your growing list.
Stop. Reduce that lengthy list, and instead focus on a single aspiration at a time. Don’t fret or compare yourselves to anyone, but you. Don’t believe that people you know can really multitask, since very few of us can, or at least effectively.
Instead, hone in on your burning desire, such as moving out of the family home, and start listing down all the things you need to do to achieve this. In this example, the tasks may look like this:
  • Get another part-time job to help you save money
  • Interact with your wider circle of friends on social media to see who might be interested in a house share
  • Call a few agencies to establish current rental rates and to ascertain what else is required – references, deposits, etc.
  • Set a realistic goal which might be for six or twelve months’ time
  • Be consistent in saving towards moving and work on a weekly basis – saving X amount per month can feel too challenging
  • Start reducing your current outgoings
  • Measure your success weekly and reward yourself with inexpensive treats: home spa nights/gatherings at friends’ houses as opposed to going out.
When we take a structured and measured approach to reach our goals, we are much more likely to realise our dreams. This formula can be applied to any goal you have in your heart.
Good luck!
