When you experience difficulties making a decision, you are likely over-thinking it due to all the anxiety you are enduring. Our ability to concentrate is impaired because we have overwhelmed our brains with worry.
It’s no surprise – so much has changed for us all this year and many of us face career and financial uncertainties. There are so many changes, which can fuel our angst.
But worrying is not productive, and nor is it good for your mental or physical health. So, what can you do to try to harness your anguish? Here are some helpful tips:
  • Find a quiet place and practice breathing techniques – even if you can only spare ten minutes daily, it’s an essential crutch. If you’ve previously dismissed the importance of learning to breathe properly, now is the time to look up a technique. It’s deemed so helpful for our wellbeing, that there are schools entirely devoted to teaching it. Try: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321805
  • Jot down your worries, because research shows that our brains find it easier to process them this way. When you’re feeling calmer you’ll be able to action, prioritise or seek support with them (e.g. calling your mortgage company for a payment holiday).
  • Rest your brain by doing some exercise – even cleaning the house will help to clear your mind! Dance your way through it for a quick burst of joy.
  • Be mindful that you can only control your thoughts and your actions. Now is the time to try to dismiss those areas of your life which are out of your control.
  • Accept that some days you’ll only be able to achieve basic tasks – breathing, sleeping, eating – and refrain from judging yourself harshly, because adapting to a new lifestyle takes time.
  •  Remember that this is your personal journey, and comparing yourself to others is counter-productive.
  •  Recall your historic accomplishments to remind you of your self-worth and achievements.
  • Jot these down, in note form, so that when you’re feeling better you can look at them with fresh eyes. New ideas may then come to mind, for example, finding new revenue streams: eBay /LinkedIn, or niche markets in our new era.
I hope these ideas have helped you to think more clearly!
