If depression is like a black sky, then those of us who endure it know how it feels when the sky lightens slightly. But what can we do to help broaden those moments of light? How can we help to keep ourselves feeling more upbeat? Here are some things that I do:

Be realistic, know that like a cloudy sky, it’s impossible to predict when your depression will take its full grip again. One of my top tips is to organise your space – tidy your home, focusing on one room at a time. Even tidying one room will make you feel far happier and more organised.
Invest in some scented candles or essential oils that evoke feelings of calm, happy or peace. I tend to use scents like geranium because it reminds me of happy times.
Get outside, whether it’s in a public garden, your own, or a seaside walk, because being in the open truly helps to unknot a cluttered head.
Pop some make-up on or wear something that you feel cosy or good in.
Eat something healthy which can instantly boost your energy levels – for me it’s blueberries.
Remember that you deserve to feel happy, therefore try practising shedding those unfounded feelings of guilt: everyone should enjoy a soak in a hot bath.
Play a favourite album but make sure its music that holds happy memories for you – it’ll increase your energy levels.
Dance, stretch and sing along – even if you can only manage to do so for ten minutes. You can always try longer another time.
Do not cram your diary with a ludicrous amount of meet ups. You’ll feel better having just met up with one friend, than trying to find excuses to cancel lots of dates.
Practice smiling at yourself in the mirror and try saying positive affirmations.
