The word “expert” is derived from the word “experience”- and that in itself is helpful to remember. Similarly, the word “professional”, in many contexts, means that a person gets paid for the pursuit they do lots of the time. For example a professional photographer may not necessarily have specific photographic qualifications.
If you are like the majority of people, then what you do for a living may not feel like your “calling”- your job could feel light-years away from the dream job you contemplated when you were younger. Equally, with many financial responsibilities, you can’t just simply leave your work on a whim due to bills needing to be paid.
However, you are most likely an expert at a pursuit that you enjoy. But of course the stresses and challenges of life commitments tend to pull you away from those childhood dreams of being an artist or helping young people who have also endured trauma.
One person I know wants to be an artist and she is an expert in the field. She’s already sold many beautifully designed greetings cards and has been commissioned by friends.
This lady is currently working as a receptionist at a school, but she’s cleverly managed to ingratiate herself to the relevant people. She has been so determined with her endeavours that shortly she will be changing roles to work within the art department instead.
Fulfilling our dreams doesn’t happen instantly – but in any slivers of spare time, what actions can you do to help get yourself one step further to pursuing a profession that you are passionate about, and one that you are an expert in?
