When you’re feeling blue, any victory is a massive victory. Whether it’s getting out of bed, getting dressed, or playing a game – you’ve done something good for yourself, and that deserves rewarding.

Firstly, recognise these things as achievements. When we’re down, everyday routines can feel impossible. So when you manage to complete one of these things when you’re feeling like this, you’ve done something amazing. So why not give yourself incentives and rewards?

Treating ourselves well is so important. We have to look after ourselves before we can even think of helping anyone else. Whether it’s your favourite chocolate bar, or an episode of your favourite TV show, find small ways that you can reward yourself to mark these achievements. Realise when you’ve done something great, and treat yourself. You could track your progress and use this to work out a rewards system.

But, on the flipside, do NOT punish yourself. If you don’t manage to complete a daily task, don’t get angry with yourself. It is so normal to not function properly during a low time. Be patient with yourself, and try again a little later. It is so important to be kind to yourself and to give yourself time and slack. Be gentle with yourself, and reward yourself regularly.
