Experiencing some stress is normal, and sometimes even beneficial for your health. But over time persistent surges of adrenalin can cause increased blood pressure, as well as anxiety and other health problems.

Whilst life is challenging for many of us, especially in the current era we’re living in, we have to try to master our stress levels.  We have to be the boss of our wayward emotions. Here are some things I do which might be helpful to you:

Try to remove yourself from the stressful situation, even if that means taking five minutes out to sit quietly on a chair. Think of five things that you are grateful to have: food in the cupboard / a warm bed / loved ones / a good sense of humour / the ability to walk.

Do some Breathing exercises: Take a deep breath in and imagine a balloon is inflating as you draw in a breath, and picture it deflating as you exhale – repeat 3-5 times.

Tap your face: your temple, or cheekbones with each hand, and repeat a positive affirmation: “I’ve got this” – repeat this 3-5 times.

Get up from the chair and stretch your limbs, roll your shoulders and stretch your back like a cat.

Plan your day the night before / batch cook to save time and money.

If you have to attend an appointment, then where possible do a dry run before, or plan the route.

Picture your day running smoothly, putting yourself in a positive state of mind is so beneficial.

Focus on what you can do as opposed to what you can’t do.

Remember you can only control your thoughts and your actions. I find this liberating.

Put on some of your favourite music, and dance away the stress.

 Call a friend.

Watch something that makes you smile.
