In an era where it can be hard to smile or find joy, we need to adjust our thinking so that more of the pleasant tingly feelings blossom in our hearts and tummies. These moments of joy help us to manage our day; they are like fuel to a vehicle.
For instance, I saw a peregrine falcon recently, and close-up! I was delighted, seeing it as an unexpected treat. It was literally just chilling in the hedgerow! I’ve told several neighbours, causing a domino effect. Now a couple of them want to explore the same little lane.
Speaking of my neighbourhood, when Brighton & Hove Albion won against Liverpool FC recently, the whole close was alive with cheering. It was a community of pride lasting for several days.
And, when my friend made some delicious looking soda and oat bread recently, I added rising-agent to my shopping list after admiring the picture.
Another friend made an impressive Victoria sponge, and even over FaceTime I felt my taste buds tingle – I later baked a chocolate version myself.
There are moments of joy in all sorts of places, even though we are in lockdown. We must look out for any small petal of it to help us feel content, inspired or uplifted. Sharing pleasant experiences is especially important now to help strengthen your mental wellbeing.
Our restricted lifestyles are necessary to combat COVID, but they go against the grain of us social creatures. Whilst I am extremely grateful for being able to see my daughter over video calls, when we end our call, I feel a surge of sadness. I’m sure you all feel the same way, and this is why finding moments of joy is so important.
