Often, anxieties are about future worries – perhaps a challenge you have to face later in the day or week. But many of us endure such levels of anxiety that we get physical symptoms: rashes, headaches, impaired concentration etc. It’s because life is hard work, especially with fundamental worries on top, such as finances and time management.
Whenever you can, I recommend learning how to breathe properly – it can help to clear your mind. I am not an expert and would suggest you Google some techniques. I like to inhale through my nose, hold my breath for eight counts and then exhale slowly through my mouth, whilst tapping my thighs – also to the count of eight.
What this achieves for me, (and I’m not ashamed to state that I do this particular exercise several times throughout the day if needed) is that bit of clear thinking to help me tackle some of the minor angsts. It evokes a sense of inner calm, which in turn can be enough to improve my sense of perspective.
Although the breathing exercise takes only seconds to do, and can be done sitting at your desk, it’s amazing how it resets your thoughts. It feels as though you can see over the hill again, and whilst it isn’t long lasting, it can be repeated as many times as you wish. If you practice it, some of your worries and angsts will feel as though they are lifting right off your shoulders.
